LESSONS FROM THE PAST

It's election time in my country and I am home visiting with my parents. Something quite interesting just happened that made me feel bad and wonder how much times had changed from the times when I was growing up within the same context.

I was opening the gate to pull-out the car when a certain lady and a little girl walked in. They were looking hard up and exhausted from a rather long journey on foot.

I stopped the lady from trying to walk into the compound when she pointed to the water tap outside the compound and said "please I want to fetch some water". I thought for a while and said "please do".

The lady fetched some water and drank then gave the little girl to drink as well. She later fetched some more into a water bottle for the road.

They thanked me and continued their journey.

I felt really bad because I recalled that as a child growing up this was usual. You could walk into almost any house that had a tap for a drink of water or even to fetch in your bucket or water bottle.

I was afraid that I had to boot before doing what I had always known to be the proper thing to do.

It should have been a no-brainer.
